Chapter 1 - The Romance

He was almost twice her age. She was twenty-five and he was forty-five. He already had seven kids everyone had known about. His first "wife", whom he never legally married, gave him his first set of children, Daphne, Daisy, Diana and Nicolette who came after his second and legally married wife's first child. She grew tired of his "womanising" ways and his abusive behaviour and left him for a chance at a better life in a foreign country after she learned of the "outside" child. Apart from leaving this old life behind, she also left her four daughters with their father. His second wife, the one he legally married and never divorced, gave him two children, Whitney and Anderson. Whitney stayed with him occasionally while Anderson never really saw his father. There are some questions about his paternity. He had Raphael's name on his birth certificate but looked a lot like the man his mother had ended up with when she had decided to leave. His third wife gave him one son named Jasen. She decided to leave just before Chandani was in the picture. Apparently there was a rumor that Raphael had gotten a married woman pregnant and they had a fight, after which she had lost the child, leaving him to be blamed as the reason. All charges were dropped however and she has since patched things up with her husband. Raphael's oldest daughter, Daphne, was one year younger than his newfound flame. Her husband, Bryden, and her had a baby named Christopher and were doing pretty well on their own since their courtship started when Daphne was a mere fourteen years old. Raphael's second daughter was also married to a man named Kai and they had Raphael's first grandchild whom they named Sarah.

Raphael and Chandani's relationship bloomed very quickly and before long she grasped the opportunity to move to the city into his home with three of his five daughters and one of his two sons, leaving behind her failed marriage and her first son who by now, was no longer an infant and was very much capable of taking care of himself as he was about to start high school.

They had grown accustomed to seeing strange new women ever so often from their father, most of whom were just as in the fairy tales, wicked old hags, who showed them no love and desperately wished they hadn't existed. Chandani was his fourth and was a different woman. She was more of a friend than a "stepmother" to the children. They grew to accept her and loved having her around for she seemed better than the rest but never worthy enough to replace their mothers, which was completely justifiable. Her son Avidesh was considered a "black sheep" though, as he was dark in complexion and seemed a little bit slow so he was never really welcomed into the new family.

Before long Raphael and Chandani were expecting their first child together. Me. Raphael was still stationed at the Brasso police station and he met Molly. A mother of five who had owned the only shop in the area for miles. Her husband had taken ill and would soon pass on from this world. On his many visits to the shop he would come into contact with Molly's youngest child. A fifteen year old girl named Herah. They would exchange conversation at times but she wasn't as sweet as most teens her age for she was a troubled child. There were stories about her father taking advantage of her innocence. She had been expelled from school after being caught having sex in a washroom cubicle with another pupil. I would assume her encounters with her father had a negative effect on her as with any other child in that situation for she had taken a liking to another father figure, Raphael.

She started to call Raphael on the phone at the police station for they had now become "friends". They started going out for drives and having conversations about what troubled their minds. Herah started to grow obsessed with the idea of having Raphael as her own. She made advances to him on one of their drives and this was the start of Raphael's troubles. Chandani had noticed a change in Raphael. He no longer wanted to be at home. He often returned from work with "love bites" about his neck and tried to almost never be present. He didn't feel the same towards her or her unborn child for there was a new younger woman in the picture.

The time came for Chandani to have her baby. By now she was aware of the other "woman" because she would receive frequent phone calls of abuse by this troubled teen. Raphael still tried to keep his alternate life a secret but Whitney and Nicolette were aware of his every move as he never hid anything from his children. Raphael left work and came to her aid but didn't prove to be as comforting as any expecting father. He yelled, "shut d fuck up na. Ah tryin tuh drive." with much shock to Chandani. Nicolette who came along for support with Chandani looked on in awe. He had left them there at the hospital and didn't return until she was discharged. It seemed he had no love for his new son. As Chandani came home she placed her newborn on the bed and went to the standpipe at the road to full a few buckets of water. She had returned to an empty house as everyone was out partying. In agonising pain she lifted each bucket up what seemed to be miles of stairs and began washing not just her clothes but Raphael's children clothes as well. They had grown too accustomed to Chandani and now treated her as more of a slave than a friend. She then cut some white sheets to make diapers for her new son as Raphael didn't leave any money or food for her. He was too busy "wining and dining" his young girlfriend. Daphne and Daisy had some marital problems and decided to return home to Daddy's house. Daphne, Whitney and Nicolette had taken Chandani to a shop which was only a few houses away. They would get food stock from here on credit and their father would always pay the bill when they returned. They assisted Chandani in anyway they could and she later grew a close bond to Whitney and Nicolette.

Two weeks later it was time to register the new baby and apply for the birth certificate. Whitney had liked a boy named "Ricardo" and Diana had liked a boy named "Enrique" and this would become my first and middle name. Raphael was now very busy with his job as the country's government had been overthrown and there was now a coup taking place. Diana and Whitney being teens decided to throw a party that would later become out of hand. Diana and Whitney had smoked so much weed that they were now atop a friend's car by the road with nothing on but their birthday suits. On hearing a threat from the neighbor to call their father they ran under the house to a man made pond their father had made to occupy his time, which really didn't do well at occupying his time, and dove in. Giggles from everyone who was there (mostly teenage men) accompanied this act. Chandani stayed in her room with Ricardo. Later that night Raphael returned after hearing what his daughters had done and he bagged all their belongings as he said, "Alyuh is fuckin slut. Yuh wa take man in my house? Not in meh mother cunt house! I eh want allyuh back here! Leave. LEAVE!" They left and waited downstairs, hiding until he left. Chandani felt sorry for them and welcome them back in when it was safe.

The very next day Nicolette had returned from a sleep over at her best friend's house and gave Chandani a letter. It was a letter from the underaged tramp addressed to Raphael. It read,-

"To my dearest Raphael,
I know people say I'm a child and I'm not right for you but soon I will be sixteen and no one can stop us from being together. I won't be a child forever. I love you and soon we will have a life together. Don't worry about what my sister Sita says. She's a fool and I wish I could just kill her and never have to deal with her again. My mother and her don't know what they are talking about. I will kill myself if I can't have you and they know I mean it because I  have tried it before! Soon we will have it all my love.
                                                                                                                 With Love Always
                                                                                                                          Herah"

Even though this hurt Chandani with every word she read, she had Nicolette and Whitney there for support and they decided to make a bonfire with all the stuffed animals that they were hiding for their father. All gifts from the underaged home wrecking whore. They had called her and played a song that was popular at the time and seemed to fit into this scenario perfectly, "she's just sixteen years old, leave her alone they say." They all had a laugh and enjoyed the few minutes that the fire had lasted but after joy always comes sorrow ...

Introduction

He was it. He was handsome and had it all. The reputation of being the "ladies man". He had women in every post he was stationed. The "bad boy" policeman. He had recently met a young mother of two who was a married woman. The wife you'd want to come home to. She was a kind and loving woman who did everything to please her husband, Aneil. The high school teacher who did all the wrong and never the right. He would come home high from the alcohol and marijuana and beat her. A battered woman but surely, this woman was no saint.

Married at the age of 16 she had her 1st child. A very happy child she named Vijay. She loved her life in the rural area of Brasso. An undeveloped countryside area that she called home. Her youngest sister, Karmani, had just moved in with them. She had gone out of control. Dropped out of school, ran away from home, started drinking and smoking weed and experimenting with drugs, having "nights out" with strange men, and now, with nowhere to go, she ended up at her sister's doorstep.  Her sister, Chandani, being the kind hearted woman she was, let her stay in her home along with her husband and their newborn son but little did she know ...

Awoken by the giggles that came from her sister's room she removed her hands from around the baby she cradled. Drifting, she approached and peeked to see her husband having a "feeling session" with her "baby" sister. She entered and made her presence known only to hear the words, "yuh cyah fuckin knock o'wa?". Ashamed she retreated back to her baby and cried. The sleepless nights began.

Day after day, night after night the young battered mother tried to cope. She was on the verge. "Should I run away and leave this place?" she thought to herself. "No!". She heard the voice in her head as clear as day. The alter ego begins. She never wanted to be a divorced single mother but slowly she started to realise that she had enough of this life and being second best to Karmani who got treated more like a wife than a sister-in-law by Aneil.

A few nights later Karmani came home with one of her suitors to see one of the many in the porch talking to Chandani and Aneil. She had informed him she was pregnant earlier that week. Too soon to show, she was afraid to tell anyone. She kissed him quickly and got out his car. She stopped, watched him drive off and came slowly up the stairs. Agitated and filled with shame she did the one thing she could think of. She cursed the poor fellow and told him she had lied. "I eh pregnant yuh jackass. I did just say that to get yuh money." He left and was never a part of her life again.

Chandani came home to discover what looked like blood stains on her carpet. She had spent that weekend visiting her parents with her son and husband. Aneil who couldn't pass up the opportunity to "lime with d boys" at the nearby bar had stayed back to have a few. "Karmani" she screamed, worried that something had happened to her, "Yuh home? Yuh ok? Wey yuh?". "Ah in meh room" she heard. Karmani was safe but was recovering from "throwin away d chile". She had planned her at home abortion three weeks in advance. Too tired and in pain from expelling the fetus she had taken pills to get rid of. She was unable to clean up her mess and shouted, "Ah need some tablet. Ah now geh meh period" Chandani later discovered the truth behind this when she found the pills Karmani had taken along with a picture of Aneil she had stashed away safely in the side of her hand bag. The truth was in front of her but she rejected the thought out of hurt and anguish.

Later that night Aneil returned "high like ah kite", his steps slow and uneven and heavy. Chandani was still on her knees trying to scrub the blood stains out of her carpets. "Wey yuh cook?" he shouted. "I eh cook. Ah tryin tuh clean up d house. An doh talk so loud. D child sleeping." she said but this was her mistake. "Doh tell meh wha d fuck I could do in my house eh! Yuh playin fuckin mad?" was enough to wake Vijay and was accompanied by his loud cries.

A broken woman, she ran out the house with Vijay locked in her arms. Her lip and nose severely bleeding. The police station was only a few houses away. She ran in and so her story begins. Here is where she met Basdeo who would soon become her lover.

Kamani said her goodbyes. She was U.S. bound soon to be married to her fiance Bob, a local boy who had left Trinidad to further his studies and make a decent life for himself. She had met him though her sister-in-law who happened to be his aunt. Chandani gave her some money she was saving, "send some nice clothes fuh Vijay wit dis fuh meh na." She loved to see her son in the latest styles but would never get the chance to see her money's worth.

Basdeo and Chandani had many days to themselves as Karmani was no longer in the picture and Aneil was always too high to know what was going on around him. Nine short months later she gave birth to her second son, Avidesh. Aneil was too dumb to even know what had happened here. She passed this bastard child off as his and he happily believed her. Basdeo, now a long gone memory for her, had a wife and child at home and a squeaky clean reputation not worthy of tarnishing.

One year had passed and the joy of a new baby had faded. Aneil returned to his old ways and the beatings continued. She would now meet her new lover while making her final report to the police station, our handsome "ladies man", Raphael, who had a string of flames and a handful of children he had no choice but to claim.

And so the story ... My story, begins ...
